I'm a professional filmmaker, writer, web developer and animator with 14 years professional experience ranging all sizes of company and situation, from startup, agency, full-time and freelance.
Remote work has always been a passion of mine. I'd say it sprung from the dreadfulness of the daily commute, but I've been doing it since before I could drive. My first real job was at an early internet firm operating out of a basement at 16. Netservice.com was its name. (Can you believe we got that domain?) I worked on many projects lost to the ages by the rapid technological change in the late 90s and me not taking care of my 3.5in floppy disk backups.
My first love was always writing and filmmaking, so I went to film school and worked in Television in New York for 5 years. I jumped to lots of departments, learning a ton about production, on-set protocols, post-production, locations and accounting.
I got serious about web technologies especially online video in 2005. I built web apps and Vlogs with the team at Oktane starting in 2006 until about 2010. We created a white-label web app to parred video with voting and blogging. The early days of video were another gold rush and everyone wanted a piece. We developed several short form web series and review shows for the big aggregators and I learned a ton about marketing encoding and distribution, especially in video, in those years.
In 2010, I set out to work for myself for really the first time in my life. I still wanted remote work and I still loved the pace of change I saw in the web industry. It was eating every other industry. I moved to Portland, Oregon and worked remotely with partners in New York on an app for the music industry and an app for concert travel that both gained significant traction and press.
I've worked on a number of smaller one-off contracts for big and small brands. Many of which are still around. I made a e-commerce shopping cart checkout for elayaway.com that was both whitelabel-able and embed-able on other merchant sites. Made a CRM for Picsell.com (an early OfferUp) using Salesforce as a backend, I've created a design system for a global fortune 100 company. (Check Web Portfolio for who).
Every summer I would return to filmmaking in the 48 hour film festivals and found a few nonprofit arts organizations to support with free videos. I found local small business clients and set them up with websites and media services with partners in Portland.
In 2015 I accepted a FT remote job at VarsityTutors.com, working on the outward facing part of their Real-time Chat learning platform. That meant optimizing SEO for hundreds of unique landing pages across localized keywords, it also meant optimizing pages for speed. I learned a lot leading the marketing team about managing and teaching Junior Engineers during my 2 years there.
Throughout this time I've often paired video production with the web products. Making a promotional video or shooting the site's photos comes with the territory. Animation with After Effects was a natural extension of that and I've done videos and animations for a variety of goals. From corporate internal to consumer facing, how-tos, banner ads. I write, shoot, edit, sound design, color-correct, distribute. From soup to nuts, or from idea to finish line.
Currently my free-time is focused on learning the techniques of Virtual Production using Blender. Much like Avatar, Motion Capture and 3D Game Engines to create a film inside the computer, but free and open source. This involves a lot of machine learning papers, computer vision and Python. It's very rewarding work. I also happen to know Wordpress.
I'm currently working freelance remote using any of those skills. Thanks for reading and please reach out to me with any questions. I'd love to hear from you.
